Facebook and Government Are you a Washington DC area developer? Then come to the first Facebook Developer Garage Washington DC since 2007.

Facebook Developer Garages are just like they sound – a place to explore, get gritty, tinker, experiment, and test out ideas for Facebook Platform. Being in the Garage is all about participating, getting ...your hands dirty, and exploring fresh ideas and solutions.

Our event will be developer-focused, there will not be a marketing or business track. However, following the Developer Garage we are hoping to have a social event nearby where developers can mingle with DC organizations interested in building on Facebook platform.

RSVP at the Facebook event for the Developer Garage Washington DC.

Facebook and Government The New York Times has a great piece about how businesses are using Facebook Pages to market themselves. Full of lessons and tips that apply to Government as well:

“You need to be where your customers are and your prospective customers are,” said Clara Shih, author of “The Facebook Era” (Pearson Education, 2009). “And ...with 300 million people on Facebook, and still growing, that’s increasingly where your audience is for a lot of products and services.”

[. . .]

Some basic rules: Buy-buy-buy messages won’t fly. The best practitioners make Facebook less about selling and more about interacting. Engage with fans and critics. Listen to what people are saying, good and bad. You may even pick up ideas for how to improve your business. Keep content fresh. Use status updates and newsfeeds to tell fans about specials, events, contests or anything of interest."

A growing number of businesses are making Facebook an indispensible part of hanging out their shingles. Small businesses are using it to find new customers, build online communities of fans and dig into gold mines of demographic information.

Facebook and Government Blake Newman at inqbation has a great and extensive post on the use of social media by the government. Worth the read.

"For example, say that I have set up a Facebook Page for my organization. You have 150 friends on your FacebookProfile and you become a Fan of my Facebook Page. Then, every time one of your 150 friends... logs into their Facebook account, they will see in the sidebar that you are a Fan of my Facebook Page and perhaps they should become a Fan too. If you are a Fan of something then perhaps I should also be a fan of that something. Through peer connections and very subtle and subliminal third-party references and recommendations, word spreads like a virus. That’s why they call it viral marketing."

www.inqbation.com
It may not be obvious at first, but to the web-savvy policy maker, establishing social media profiles and promoting government agencies and non-profit organizations through social media venues such as Facebook, YouTube and Twitter makes a lot of sense.
