CITA la mitica scimmia di Tarzan!!! Cheeta is a chimpanzee character appearing in numerous Hollywood Tarzan movies of the 1930s and 1940s as the ape sidekick of the title character, Tarzan. His role in these films is to provide comic relief, convey messages between Tarzan and his allies, and occasionally lead Tarzan'...s other animal friends to the ape-man's rescue. While inextricably associated in the public mind with Tarzan, Cheeta as a character was a product of the movies, never appearing in any of the original Tarzan novels by Edgar Rice Burroughs. There are, in fact, no chimpanzees at all in the novels, the closest analog to Cheeta therein being Tarzan's monkey companion N'kima, who appears in several of the later books. The character was honored with a star on the Palm Springs Walk of Stars on 31 March 1995. His star is at 110 South Palm Canyon Drive.[1] Since 2004 there have been several unsuccessful campaigns to secure a star for Cheeta on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and as of 2008 filmmaker Matt Devlen is continuing the effort.[2] Attempting for the seventh time to get him a sidewalk star, the handlers of Cheeta (Jiggs), a chimpanzee alleged to portrayed the screen Cheeta, launched an online petition to get supporters to urge the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce to give him a star in 2009. As of June 2008, Cheeta was not selected to be so honored. It has been held that the role of Cheeta in the majority of the Tarzan films was played primarily by a single male chimpanzee, named Cheeta after the role he played, but also known as Jiggs. This Cheeta is alleged to have appeared in non-Tarzan films in other chimp roles as well, and supposedly became the longest-lived chimpanzee known on reaching the age of 64 in 1996 (chimpanzees typically live to be 40-45 in the wild). He lives at a primate sanctuary called Creative Habitats and Enrichment for Endangered and Threatened Apes (or CHEETA) in Palm Springs, California, and is cited by the Guinness Book of World Records as the world's oldest non-human primate. [3] However, according to an investigative article by R. D. Rosen published in the Washington Post most of this Cheeta's history, including his age, was apparently fabricated, and he never appeared in any movies. In fact, according to Rosen, "In each Tarzan movie, the Cheeta role [was] played by more than one chimp, depending on what talents the scene called for."[4] (See Cheeta (JIggs), below.) Another alleged Cheeta from the early Tarzan movies lives at Suncoast Primates in Palm Harbor, Florida, where he has resided since the 1950s.[5]
