United Arab Emirates: The Abu Dhabi Education Council (ADEC) recently hired a thousand native English-speaking teachers from Canada, the UK, the US, Australia and New Zealand to teach English, Math, Science and IT in English language at public schools across the emirate. The advancement... of education, particularly higher education, is an integral part of the ‘Abu Dhabi Vision 2030’, which aims to reduce the emirate’s reliance on the oil sector as a source of economic activity and focus more on knowledge-based industries.

Pennsylvania: In Philadelphia in 2008, officials set up a meeting with parents and representatives from immigrant groups. The meeting focused on one issue: Immigrants were being beaten and harassed in city classrooms. What would the district do? The book the class recently read was “Cajas de cartón” by Francisco Jiménez. The book’s difficulty makes it a common choice for undergradu...ate study of Spanish as a foreign language. But the class discussing the memoir Friday was Loraine Perez’s fifth grade class at Klein Road Elementary School. All of the students in her class have been enrolled in the dual language (also known as dual immersion) program that began in the New Braunfels Independent School District when they were all in kindergarten.

SF teachers face deadline for specialty credential
California: Tuesday, San Francisco's Board of Education may vote to begin firing teachers who are not credentialed to work with kids who are learning English. It is an impending consequence that some teachers are fighting. A teacher who has even a single English learner... in the classroom must have the special credential. Since 2005 it has been a state law and since 2007 the San Francisco Unified School District has been notifying teachers of the requirement. Two years ago, 900 teachers in San Francisco were not CLAD certified or their certification had expired; today only 64 are not.
